L.E.A.P. – Learners Engaged Actively in Play – Kindergarten to Grade 3
Project -based, inquiry-led learning is the foundation for our primary LEAP program. This program challenges students to reflect on their interests and their questions, share those wonders with those around them and have an opportunity to gain knowledge through guidance in the classroom and play-based learning approaches.
Learning is student driven, and engagement remains high as student interests are used to develop an inquiry for the entire class to engage in. The teacher takes on the role of facilitator, scaffolding learning opportunities and developing play-based approaches for students to increase their understanding of the topic, develop peer engagement skills and sustain their learning.
Goals in the Primary L.E.A.P. program include:
– Sharing an interest with peers / listening to and accepting others’ interests
– Sustaining work on the topic to demonstrate the learning process.
– Engaging in an active, play-based or creative component in the learning process.
L.E.A.P. – Learners Engaged Actively in Projects – Grades 4 to 8
Project -based, inquiry lead learning is the foundation for our LEAP program. This program challenges students to move from simpler, surface level questions, to deeper, more complex questions that will open the door to independent investigation.
Learning is student driven, and engagement remains high as students delve into the topic of their choice, inspiring a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the material.
The teacher takes on the role of facilitator, providing a framework in which the students can conduct their research and present their findings – whether it be through song, poster board, video or diorama. In the end, one question is answered, but many more have arisen, and a spark has been ignited.
Goals in the Primary L.E.A.P. program include:
– Helping students develop and articulate interests and areas of focus.
– Sustaining work on the topic to demonstrate the learning process, including the creation of a final product.
– Developing and leveraging personal strengths to help fulfill learning goals.
Junior / Intermediate LEAP activities have traditionally included a LEAP Fair, which is a showcase of student learning in whatever inquiry they chose. Students may ‘show what they know’ in ways aligned to their strengths. LEAP activities include the school Science Fair and the Public Speaking Showcase.
