Parent-Teacher Conferences, Annual Fund, Book Fair, Halloween and Cross Country

Wednesday October 25, 2017

Dear JA Families,

I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who participated in our round table meetings this fall. Your feedback has been fantastic and there are several actionable items.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be collating responses and I plan to have an evening to share these responses with you. One area of discussion was the format of Parent-Teacher Conferences. I would like to draw your attention to the changes we are implementing, listed below.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

During parent round-table discussions, we discussed the current interview schedule (two weeks prior to report cards) and some alternatives. Overwhelmingly, we heard that interviews would be much more effective after the first report card is distributed. Accordingly, we will be cancelling the November 15 interview day and we will revert back to our regular dismissal times.

The first term report card will be sent home on Friday, December 1st.

We will be conducting Parent-Teacher conferences on Monday, December 4th from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, December 5th from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Please note, there will be an early dismissal on December 4th. Kindergarten, grades one and two will be dismissed at 1:30, grade 3 and four at 1:40 and grades five through eight at 1:50. Interview sign-ups will be available on Edsby beginning on November 20th.

Annual Fund

Great news, contributions continue to come at a steady rate and we are forecasting that most families, and hopefully all, will be supporting this year’s campaign. Because of your generous donations and pledges, we have already reached the $30, 000 mark! If you haven’t made your contribution yet, we hope that all families will make a contribution suitable to their individual circumstance. Thank you to everybody for their generosity!

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be November 15-17 in our library. We are looking for parent volunteers to help us with this event. There are 2 ways to help out!

Set Up Volunteers – This would take place on November 14 and will take several hours, helping the Scholastic staff set up the displays and books in the library.

Cashiers – We need several parents to act as cashiers for the students purchasing books. There are 2 shifts each day; 8-8:40am and 3 – 4:30. (You do not need to sign up for an entire shift, we can split shifts between volunteers:)

This is a very popular event that not only promotes reading at home, but also provides new books to our classrooms and library.

Cross Country
Last Friday, our runners attended the second SSAF Cross-Country meet and showed both determination and team spirit.  On behalf of Mr. Perryman and Ms. Simpson, I would like to pass on a congratulations to all of the runners for their progress dedication and would like to thank all those who helped by cheering and encouraging our students.

Students are invited to come in costume on Tuesday, October 31st.  If your child chooses to wear a costume for Halloween, please ensure that their choice is appropriate, inclusive, and respectful.  Toy weapons of any sort are not permitted at school.  Any participation in Halloween activities is completely voluntary.  Those who choose to participate and those who choose not to are both equally deserving of respect during Halloween celebrations.

Students should bring a change of clothing, free dress, as well as skating attire (if they participate in skating)

Should you wish to send in a treat with your child as part of Halloween activities, we require that it be nut-free, and we encourage you to consider non-food treats such as cards, pencils, or stickers.

We will have a brief assembly on Tuesday morning 8:45 a.m. and parents are invited to join us in the gym for a costume parade followed by a Halloween story. Assembly should conclude by 9:10. Due to limited parking in the lot behind the school we ask that parents park on a side street.

Please note, there are no after school clubs on October 31st
