Wednesday November 15, 2017
Dear JA Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful mid-November break this past weekend. Thank you to all of the parents who joined us at our Remembrance Day Assembly last Thursday and a thank you to Mr. Sidler and Ms. Leach who organized the assembly.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair has started! The book fair will be held from November 15-17 in our library. Please find a time at drop-off or pick-up to come in and browse the selections.
This is a very popular event that not only promotes reading at home, but also provides new books to our classrooms and library. We look forward to seeing you at the book fair!
This Friday, November 17th, is Spirit Day. We will have a number of activities for the students to participate in with their houses during our morning assembly as well as at recess. We ask that all students wear as many items of their house colour as possible on Friday!
Parent – Teacher Conferences
A reminder that the first term report card will be sent home on Friday, December 1st and we will be conducting Parent-Teacher conferences on Monday, December 4th from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, December 5th from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Please note, there will be an early dismissal on December 4th. Kindergarten, grades one and two will be dismissed at 1:30, grade 3 and four at 1:40 and grades five through eight at 1:50.
Interview sign-ups will be available on Edsby beginning, November 20th at 9:00 am.
- On November 20th, you will receive a new message in the message folder (file folder icon on the top left of the screen) which will read, “Fall 2017 PT Conference”.
- Click on the message and then click on the button, “Book a Parent-Teacher Interview”
- This will take you to a spreadsheet of available times with your child’s teachers. Click on a “Free” time to book.
If you require technical support when signing up for an interview, please contact the office.
Interviews are scheduled in 20-minute blocks and teachers will be required to keep to their scheduled timeline so that the afternoon runs smoothly. If you wish for your child to remain in the After-Care Program and he/she does not usually attend, please contact the office so arrangements can be made.
Survey Monkey Round Table Follow-Up
On November 23rd at 6:30 p.m., we will be offering an evening meeting for parents who wish to attend, where I will share the results of the round table. Kristine Locklin will also be presenting on Public v.s. Private therapy sessions for Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy. If you are planning to attend this session, I ask that you RSVP to Nick Johnson, email@example.com in order to give us a better sense of attendance.
Prior to the meeting, we have created a brief Survey Monkey, which we will also be able to use to guide our presentation. Please take a few moments to complete this anonymous survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8XSRB62
Holiday Concert – Save the Date
If you don’t have this marked on your calendar already, our annual Holiday Concert will take place on December 14th, 2017. The theme of this year’s concert will be ‘Snowtastic’! The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. and wrap up by 8:00 p.m. There will be a social for parents between 5:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. in the library, and students will be supervised in their classroom at this time. Tickets will go on sale in December and they will be $10 each.
Holiday Decorating Volunteers Needed
We will be looking for a number of volunteers a couple of events coming up in the next month.
Each year around this time Junior Academy is decorated for the holidays. If you have a knack for tree trimming, preparing outdoor planters or can help with other interior decorations around the school please let Nick Johnson know by Friday, November 24th. Once we know who is available, a convenient day will be selected. We will need looking for volunteers to decorate:
-A tree in the Atrium
-The interior entranceways
-The library for our December 14th winter concert.
-The stage for our December 14th winter concert. (Morning of December 14th)
Volunteers for Latke Day – December 18
Latke day at JA has become a tradition! If you are able to assist either by donating Latka’s or helping for a couple of hours on the Monday of December 18th to reheat and distribute Latka’s to homerooms, please contact Jacqui Robbins (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Friday December 8th. Usually about a dozen families donate a dozen latkes each (homemade or purchased), sour cream and/or apple sauce to the event.
Outdoor Clothing and labels
A reminder that as the cold weather arrives, it is now time to begin sending cold weather items such as hats, gloves, scarves and boots to school with your child. Please ensure that your child has the items necessary to remain warm in the colder weather and that all articles of clothing are properly labelled.
Contributions continue to come in but there’s still lots of room left in our annual fund campaign! We are hopefully that all families will be supporting this year’s campaign.
If you haven’t made your contribution yet, we hope that all families will make a contribution suitable to their individual circumstance.
Thank you to everybody for their generosity!
