Progressive. Investigation. Education. (P.I.E.) Program at Junior Academy

The P.I.E. program at Junior Academy provides a unique learning environment.  We address the needs of gifted children who may also have another learning exceptionality. These “twice exceptional” (2E) learners can often struggle with having higher levels of development in some areas, yet need assistance in others (Developmental Asynchrony). Our program provides the environment for these children to thrive by incorporating their strengths and interests in a highly engaging and personalized manner.

+ WHAT DOES THIS ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE AT SCHOOL?

Students in the program work with a facilitator, who is an Ontario certified teacher, to create a project of interest with learning goals and success criteria. The facilitator/teacher incorporates curriculum tie-ins spanning language, math, science and social studies from a variety of different grade levels.

+ THE ROLE OF THE FACILITATOR/TEACHER

Is to lead the development of project-based learning using the student’s interests as a launch point, and also to be an enthusiastic participant. The facilitator will assist the student in areas that need growth or improvement and incorporate cross curricular links in to each project. Finally, a safe learning place will be created and communication with families, teachers and aids/therapists will take place frequently.

+ DEVELOPMENTAL ASYNCHRONY

Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching, and counseling in order for them to develop optimally.

Meaning, that in one social, academic, intellectual or creative area they may be developing ahead of their age peers, and in other areas they are developing more slowly, at their own natural rate.

+ 2E “TWICE EXCEPTIONAL”

Students learn differently due to their high abilities and challenges that may come with dual diagnosis (Gifted, Aspergers, Autism, ADHD, LD).
