Dear JA Families,
Our hallways are certainly quiet today with several classes attending a farm field trip and our 5-8 students are away at Camp Onondaga. I look forward to letting you know all about their experiences.
Many teachers are regularly posting on Edsby and all of our classes are sharing their weekly Friday class update on Edsby. We also have many new groups on Edsby this year! Please check out the recent activity including Currently, we have 109 parents (out of 157 possible) who have activated and set up their Edsby account. If you did not receive an email inviting you to do so, or are having any other issues with Edsby, please contact the office so we can assist in resolving the issue.
Junior Academy community supports may organizations and special community events over the school year. We have two special events coming up!
Terry Fox Walk/Run – Friday September 29
Our annual Terry Fox Run will be held this Friday, September 29th. This is our first House Team Event of the year and all students are encouraged to come dressed in their house colours to show their team spirit! A reminder that new house t-shirts may be worn on the 29th. House points can be earned for every article of clothing and accessories that students wear, displaying their house colour. Students will have brought home their fundraising pledge forms in their Agendas and donations can be made online on behalf of our school. If you donate online, please let your child’s home room teacher know how much was donated so your child can get credit for their house team.
In addition to the Terry Fox Run/Walk, Junior Academy will be participating in a Thanksgiving Food Drive known as Sarah and Claire’s Food Drive School Challenge, which supports the Daily Bread Food Bank. Last Friday, We were lucky to have Claire join us at our assembly, sharing some details around why the food drive is so important.
Over the past 10 years, Sarah Jordan, her little sister Claire and their parents, have raised over 300,000 pounds of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank, and they are just getting started! This year they have close to 20 schools participating in what they are calling the “Battle of Bayview!” Schools like us, west of Bayview Avenue will compete as one team against schools east of Bayview to raise the greatest weight in food items! Let’s help win this battle for the West this year!!
Here is a list of some of the most needed items that the Daily Bread Food Bank is looking for:
▪ Baby Formula and Food
▪ Canned Fruits or Vegetables
▪ Canned Fish or Meat
▪ Dried Pasta and Tomato Sauce
▪ Cans of Soup or Hearty Stew
▪ Cans of Beans
▪ Macaroni and Cheese
Each day during the week of Oct 2nd, students are encouraged to drop their donations in their House coloured box inside the back doors. To find out more about these inspiring young ladies and the Battle of Bayview, please visit http://sarahsfooddrive.com.
At Junior Academy, we believe there is much to be learned outside the classroom! Each term, every class will take a field trip. All field trips will have curriculum links and extend learning outside the regular classroom. We will ensure you are provided with appropriate paperwork and forms at least a week in advance so that you have time to prepare your child for their trip. If teachers are requesting additional parent supervisors, that will be noted in the field trip letter. A reminder that a police check is required to participate in any school activities with the students.
Today, the kindergarten, grades one and two classes are all participating in a field trip in a field trip to Applewood Farm. All of our grades 5-8 students are currently away at camp Onondaga, focusing on Leadership, Group Dynamics and I’m certain that they’re having lots of fun as well! Next week, our grade six class is heading out to Evergreen Brickworks for a science related trip.
Winter Parents’ Association Event
We are still looking for parents who are interested in forming a committee to investigate, plan and potentially organize a Winter fundraising event for the Parents’ Association. Some ideas that were discussed include a Gala style event, a Fair, a Bizarre or an event night for the parent community. We already have a couple of parents who have offered to join a planning committee! If you are interested in joining this committee or, if you have a great idea / access to a venue, food service provider or entertainer, all ideas and assistance would be greatly appreciated Please feel free to contact Paul Bamberger at email@example.com
