Dear JA Families,
It was terrific to see many of you last Thursday at our Welcome Back Barbecue as well as last evening at Curriculum Night. If you were unable to attend, your child’s teacher will send home a curriculum package in the agenda this week. I would like to acknowledge Kevin McCafferty from STEM Village who spoke about our technology program and Mark Sidler who spoke about our Guidance program last night.
Collaborative and Proactive Solutions
Last night, I introduced the CPS model which was developed by Dr. Ross Greene. The key theme of the model is that kids do well if they can and doing well is preferable to not doing well. We are quite excited about CPS because it teaches children the skills they need to function adaptively in the real world. CPS focuses on identifying skills a child is lacking and the expectations he or she is having difficulty meeting. Challenging behavior in kids is best understood as the result of lagging skills and the best way to reduce challenging episodes is by working together with the child – collaborating – to solve problems. To find out more about CPS, please visit: http://www.livesinthebalance.org/parents-families

New House Shirts
Our new House shirts have arrived and all students will be receiving a new shirt during their team’s first intramural event. House shirts should be worn during all intramural activities and they should be worn during the Terry Fox event at the end of the month.
Parents’ Association Meeting
The first Parents’ Association meeting will take place on Wednesday September 20th at 8:30 a.m. in the library. All are welcome and I encourage anyone who would like to help in the school and be involved in planning events and activities for the students in the upcoming academic year to attend. If you aren’t able to make meetings but would like to help behind the scenes please let us know, there are many ways you can still help out!
Parent Grade Socials: In past years, parents from various classes have gotten together for an evening either at someone’s home or at a local restaurant for drinks, to chat and get to know each other. Most of our classes already have something in the works. We are still looking for someone, or a couple of volunteers, from the Grades 5 and 6 classes who will step up to organize or host a get together. Please contact Cathy Hibbert firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to assist.
RFRK Lunch Club
Our lunch program, ‘The Lunch Club’ has begun however, if you haven’t signed up for the Real Food for Real Kids Lunch Program, you can still register by visiting: https://lunchclubs.rfrk.com/collections/junior-academy
