Academic Programs

Junior Academy was established in September 1988 by  Dianne Johnson with the goal of providing a smaller private school setting where boys and girls could benefit from an elementary school program that accommodated different learning styles and stressed individual achievement.

Starting with a single primary class, the student body gradually grew until the school offered classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

The school’s 25-year legacy of commitment to individual excellence was further cemented when Junior Academy opened the doors to a brand new purpose-built, modern, bright school building on Bayview Avenue, north of Lawrence Avenue in 2008.

Our Founder
Dianne Johnson, B.A., M. Ed.

The philosophy of Junior Academy centers on the credentials and dedication of its founder, Dianne Johnson. Throughout her career, Dianne has applied her focus and dedication to helping all types of students succeed, which she believes is best achieved in a smaller, independent school environment.

Dianne has had extensive teaching and administrative experience.  She has taught at all levels in elementary school, as well as French as a second language throughout secondary school. In addition, her postgraduate studies focused on such areas as ‘Diagnostic and Psychological Testing’ and ‘Special Education strategies for the Gifted and Learning Disabled Child.’

Prior to founding Junior Academy, Dianne gained valuable experience with some of Canada’s leading independent schools, including seven years as director of the junior school at Montreal’s well-known Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s School, a university preparatory school for girls from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  She also served four years as principal of Montcrest, a co-educational school for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 located in Toronto.

In addition, Dianne has lent her professional expertise as a member of the executive of the Ontario Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (Toronto chapter), during which time she was responsible for duties related to educational programming.
